Els italians mengen molta pasta.
Com hem vist a l'anterior exemple, l'article definit (the) es pot ometre amb els plurals acabats en s. Compara les oracions següents:
I am going to study Catalan because I like the Catalans.
I am going to study Catalan because I like Catalans.
Tinc pensat estudiar català perquè els catalans em cauen bé.
The Chinese grow a lot of rice. (L'article the és necessari.)
Els Chinesos cultiven molt d'arròs.
The Swiss make very tasty chocolates. (L'article the no es pot llevar, puix que no s'ha afegit cap s per a fer el plural.)
Els suïssos fan bombons molt saborosos.
Les oracions de més avall signifiquen el mateix:
(The) Germans are used to the cold. It freezes in Germany in the winter.
German people are used to the cold. It freezes in Germany in the winter.
Els alemanys estan acostumats al fred. Fa molt de fred a Alemanya a l'hivern.
Més exemples:
Japanese girls are beautiful.
Les noies japoneses són molt boniques.
(The) Canadians speak English and French.
Els canadencs parlen anglès i francès.
We like Chinese food, so we ate at a Chinese restaurant.
Ens agrada el menjar xinès, i per això vam menjar en un restaurant xinès.
A person who comes from Poland is Polish / A person who comes from Poland is a Pole.
Una persona que procedeix de Polònia és polonesa.
Two people who come from Poland are Polish / Two people who come from Poland are Poles.
Dues persones de Polònia són poloneses.
*Nota que les paraules Spain i Spanish són imperialistes o colonialistes. Per a referir-se a la llengua de Castella, cal emprar Castilian:
He speaks Castilian.
(Ell) parla castellà.
Tanmateix, quan faces un examen, potser el professor preferesca "Spanish". En cas de dubte, pregunta-li.
