Notes

• Round bracktets ‘()’ have been used to indicate that a word or phrase may be omitted, or to provide explanations:
     We have (very) few onions.
The girl [(who is) sitting] behind Tim is Mr Brown’s daughter.
     He got (informal)/became (formal) angry.

In the second example, square brackets ‘[]’ and round brackets have been employed to suggest that we can leave out either ‘who is’ or ‘who is sitting’:
The girl who is sitting behind Tim is Mr Brown’s daughter.
The girl sitting behind Tim is Mr Brown’s daughter.
The girl behind Tim is Mr Brown’s daughter.

• Slashes ‘/’ are used to separate alternatives: He has studied/has been studying Italian since 1990.
